How do I add a transaction subcategory?

You can add your own subcategories to better classify your transactions. Any subcategories you add must belong to one of the main categories listed in Mint. 
Follow these steps to create your own subcategory. 

From the Mint app:

  1. Open the Mint app and scroll down to Recent Transactions, select See all
  2. Find the transaction you’d like to recategorize and select it
  3. Select Category
  4. Select Add a subcategory under the main category that fits best
  5. Name your new subcategory and select Add subcategory or Save
  6. Tap on your new subcategory to use it for the current transaction
  7. You’ll see a Saving category message and be taken back to your transaction


  1. Sign in to
  2. Select Transactions near the top of the page
  3. Choose the transaction you’d like to update and select its existing category
  4. Select the arrows next to the category name
  5. Select Add/Edit Categories… under the appropriate main category
  6. Select ADD A CATEGORY
  7. Name your new subcategory and select SAVE
  8. Select I’M DONE
